Six Years and Counting!

If this was a wedding anniversary, the gift would be iron! Thankfully, it’s a work anniversary, so the present is cake!

My name is Hannah Witt.

I am delighted to have been in my role for 6 years this month. Time flies, especially when you consider the pandemic.

So what have I been doing all these years at My Debt Recovery? Here’s a little bit about my life in and outside of work.

How did you get into doing your current role?

I had known Sean since I started in the Insolvency Industry.

In 2019 I was becoming disillusioned with the role as a case administrator and Sean offered me the opportunity to take on a role which covered the favourite parts of my insolvency role (investigations, debtor collections etc) whilst leaving my least favourite parts behind (Progress reports, case reviews etc!)

What is your career background?

My degree required me to take a year out and gain some real-life work experience.  I did my degree in accounting and business, so a role in a top 10 accounting firm was just the ticket. From here, I secured a graduate training contract, so after my final year of university, I went back to the same firm to work in their insolvency team.

What does a typical day look like?

We have to be disciplined. If we say we will follow up, we have to, as debtors need to know we are serious and that actions or lack of actions have consequences. This means the day often starts with chasing overdue payments and reminders for upcoming payments.

The rest of the day is mainly dictated by emails and calls from either debtors or clients and responding accordingly to whatever lands on my desk.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Telling a client we have recovered the money they are owed. This never gets boring.

What parts of the job do you find challenging?

Patience is a virtue. Sometimes, I find being patient a challenge. We hear a lot of excuses in this job, and that can be frustrating. Also, waiting for payments to clear or cheques to arrive! That would test anyone’s patience!

And just for fun,

What is your favourite film?

Favourite childhood film has to be The Wizard of Oz. Don’t talk to me about Return to Oz; that is a horror film, in my opinion.

Favourite overall film(s) that I could watch time and time again would have to be Blood Diamond and Layer Cake.

What is the bravest thing you have done?

A bungee jump in New Zealand in 2017 on my honeymoon. It was a dare.
